Phase two. Rampant speculation and knee-jerk reactions, anyone?
As much as I’m disappointed at the lack of a Black Panther or even a Widow-centric movie, neither particularly surprises me at this point. One because Marvel is as nervous about black superheroes as Warner Brothers is about quality superhero movies. And two, they seriously underestimated the fan reaction to Natasha in the Avengers. (They shouldn’t have, but they did - just look at their marketing materials and toy releases).
I still think they could field our favorite Wakandan somewhere, adding him as a secondary character in one of the above titles and giving him featured status in the next Avengers movie (like they did Natasha). And if we’re really pulling the trigger on the Winter Soldier, who better to help Cap hunt down the Soldier than the Black Widow, who knows a thing or five dozen about these things.
Do I think both deserve their own films? Hells yeah. I’d pony up for that in a heartbeat. But I have hope that they’ll still have their place as we move forward.
I’m still kinda in awe that we’re getting a Guardians of the Galaxy movie. It’s proof-positive that this whole connected movie universe idea has merit if only because it allows lesser known titles and characters like these to get a spotlight. Without the universe and its fans behind it, these characters would never make it past a pitch-stage. I. Cannot. Wait.
The one thing that does disappoint me is Ant-Man. I love the creative team, and I can see (kinda) where Dr. Pym will fit in the larger universe. But let’s face it, he’s another white, male, scientist and we already have two of those. Not to mention Pym’s more problematic back-story issues. I will be irritated beyond belief if we lose Jan because the Marvel team doesn’t want to deal with that particular, well-publicized, backstory, but at the same time I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s how they decide to skirt the whole issue.
Unless Ant-Man means we’re going to see Ultron. And unless Ultron builds Vision. Using Coulson.
…Nope, that’s still gonna bother me. I’d be happy to see Coulson, but it’s still gonna bother me.
